Chapter 22

Samantha

Monday morning, Lou comes over bright and early, and we snuggle with a blanket on the couch, talking about how she wants to own a unicorn.

Then we all have breakfast together and Deke leaves for work. Amber and I move to the back deck, talking while Lou plays on the beach. We talk about how shoulder pads should never come back in style.

That night we have dinner together, and when Amber goes to put Lou to bed afterward, Deke and I talk on the back deck. It’s the first time we’ve talked alone since the not-date—or the rain-checked family discussion—and I thought he would bring up those past conversations.

I’m pleasantly surprised when he keeps the convo light and silly.

He makes me laugh while telling me stories of funny things kids have said and done while learning to snorkel, and they all make me feel better about my first (and only) attempt. I can’t explain why I haven’t gone back, and I appreciate that he’s never asked.

When it’s finally late enough that we need to go in, he walks me to my back door, opens it, and looks me in the eyes. “Goodnight, Pepper.”

I love his eyes. They are like the bright sky on a cloudless day.
